CHURCH OF THE CONVENT MADRES ISABELES

In 1481, Doña Aldonza Ruiz de Barrientos (widow of Don Francisco Maldonado and relative of the Dukes of Alba) formed the community of Franciscas Terceras de Alba, whose convent was originally called the Mother of God.

Santa Teresa stayed here when she arrived at the Villa to start her foundations.

It is striking the beauty of the façade, from the middle of the sixteenth century in which you can see the coat of arms of the Ducal house, supported by two savages. In the temple is preserved a quite valuable altarpiece, which includes a statue of the Virgin seated on the throne flanked by representations of Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Mark.

The church was restored leaving in sight a coffered from the middle of the sixteenth century, with a beautiful border. Worthy of note is the chapel of Gaytán, a Plateresque work that preserves the original grille and a magnificent Renaissance cloister, consisting of two floors with five arcades in each of the bays that support a flat ceiling. In each angle arcs-diaphragm appear. Granitic columns that serve as support, very simple bases that lack capitals. In the cloister some of the original doors are preserved.

Since 1951 the building occupies a teaching college, where Early Childhood Education, Primary Education and Secondary Education are taught.

Declared of Cultural Interest in 1996.
